ENDODONTIST : a dental specialist whose job is to examine, diagnose and provide dental treatment to medical conditions that impact the interior and surrounding areas of teeth in the human body.
These highly trained dental experts focus on the monitoring and preventing of dental diseases that impact the nerves, roots, pulp, blood vessels and other interior parts of the tooth. However, they also examine gums and all other related tissues that impact the overall performance of the teeth.
In order to become a licensed endodontist, a candidate must pass board certification. This path begins by receiving a bachelor’s degree, then progresses to dental school and becoming a licensed Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS).
After receiving this degree designation, the future endodontist will spend two years in residency training, learning how to specialize in endodontic procedures.
We can say that all endodontists are dentists, but less than three percent of dentists are endodontists. Their additional training focuses on diagnosing tooth pain and root canal treatment and other procedures relating to the interior of the tooth.
That is why their services in dental clinics require extra charges than the general dentists. The additional cost may be around RM300 to RM500 out of the total cost for the service of endodontist.
Some of the treatments endodontist provide include
- Examining, monitoring, and diagnosing root or gum related diseases.
- Probing gums for pocket-layer depth to diagnose, treat and prevent gum diseases, including gingivitis
- Removing tooth pulp and tissues, or replacing infected tissues within teeth
- Performing cosmetic dental work, such as replacing damaged teeth with artificial teeth, restoring tooth color, and other cosmetic dental procedures
In many cases, a diseased tooth can be saved with endodontic treatment. And because of that, endodontists proudly refer to themselves as Specialists in Saving Teeth.
