You are currently viewing PORCELAIN & COMPOSITE VENEERS

Ever wonder why celebrities always have perfect teeth and a flashing white smile? Well, we know why, it’s VENEERS!! Though veneers treatment doesn’t come cheap but it’s more accessible here in Malaysia than it was years ago. In addition, the cost of having veneers is not expensive compared to when it was first introduced and became popular in Malaysia.

So, what exactly is veneers? What types of veneers that available out there?

There are two types of veneers, one is PORCELAIN veneers and the other one is what we called COMPOSITE veneers.

What are the differences between these two?

A porcelain veneer is a thin shell that is custom-made to fit on the tooth. The function of porcelain veneers is to do a slight position alterations to patients tooth or to change their tooth shape, size, and color.

These are the benefits of porcelain veneers:

Porcelain veneers are strong and long-lasting. They have a natural-looking surface. Plus, less tooth enamel needs to be removed than with a crown or cap. Most importantly they don’t stain easily.

Porcelain veneers are known to be long lasting, has similar look like real teeth and cannot stain. However, it is more costly than composite veneers and just in case your veneers are chipped/worn down (which is rarely happen), you need to change the whole affected teeth with a new one.

And if you must know, those flashing white smiles of celebrities is mostly a work of porcelain veneers!!

Steps to place porcelain veneers:

To prepare the tooth, the dentist usually removes a small amount of enamel from the front and sides of the teeth. This makes room for the veneers so that your teeth look natural. Then, the dentist will make an impression, or mould, of the prepared teeth.

The dentist will also decides on the veneer shade that will be best for your smile. The impression is sent to a dental lab that custom-makes the porcelain veneers to fit your teeth. This may take several days.

The dentist may give you temporary veneers to wear in the meantime. At the next visit, the dentist places the veneers on the teeth to check the fit and shape. After any adjustments, the teeth are cleaned and the veneers are bonded to the tooth.

A composite resin veneer is made from a tooth-colored filling material bonded to the tooth. The function of composite veneers is more to emulate the natural dental tissues encountered by patients.

These are the benefits of composite resin veneers:

They usually less tooth enamel needs to be removed than for crowns or porcelain veneers. Furthermore, it may mean fewer visits to the dentist, sometimes these veneers take just one visit. Not to mention , it cost less than porcelain veneers and are easy to fix if they get damaged. Although composite veneers are generally not as strong or wear-resistant as porcelain veneers, composite veneers can be repaired easily and quickly

Steps to place composite resin veneers:

After the teeth are prepared or reshaped, the dentist carefully bonds and sculpts the composite material using a color that is best for you. A special light is used to harden the composite and bond it to your teeth. Lastly, the veneers are smoothed and polished to look like natural teeth.

Types of composite veneers

Direct Composite Veneers

These veneers are made of filled resins and have a “plastic” appearance. These are made in the surgery directly onto your teeth. It only takes a single appointment to cosmetically enhance your teeth with direct composite veneers.

Indirect Composite Veneers (made in the laboratory)

When they are sent to the laboratory harder plastics can be used to produce longer-lasting hardened composite veneers. They look and feel similar to porcelain veneers and are bonded to your teeth on a separate appointment in a similar way.

Prefabricated Veneers For Teeth

These are pre-made and are chosen according to the colour and size required. They are made from a patented nano-hybrid composites using modern laser technology. These veneers are laser sintered and this allows these composite veneers to retain their sheen for longer than normal composite veneers. These veneers are often termed one day, same day, instant or immediate veneers.

Patients love composites because they are quick, less expensive and produce very lifelike and beautiful results. You can put composite resin on as many teeth as you choose. A full smile makeover can be a fifth of the cost of regular porcelain veneers. Composite veneers are a great cosmetic alternative to porcelain used all over the world. They can also correct a whole host of problems that are causing you to be self conscious about your smile.
