Caring For Children’s Teeth

Did you know? Even before your baby was born, tooth buds were developing under his gums. Here’s a baby teeth chart of when pearly whites typically start to appear and when baby teeth begin falling out to make way for permanent ones.

Keep in mind that this is a general timeline. It’s perfectly normal for your baby’s first tooth to show up at 3 months – or after his first birthday. Some babies are even born with teeth! It’s also fine if your child’s teeth come in or fall out in a different order than what’s outlined here.

Kids grow up so fast. Sometimes, it feels like they can go from toddler to teenager in the blink of an eye. In relation to that, kid’s dental care should not be neglected by parents. Teaching your child proper oral care at a young age is an investment in his or her health that will pay lifelong dividends. With the help of pediatric dental care, it should be easy for both parents and kids. Pediatric dental care ensures your child’s primary teeth stay healthy and free of decay and other dental diseases.

You can start this healthy lifestyle at home. Set a good example by taking good care of your own teeth sends a message that oral health is something to be valued to your children. Makes anything involved taking care of teeth fun, like brushing along with your child with music or dancing or letting them choose their own toothbrush, this is to encourage them the proper oral care.

When Should My Child Begin Brushing Teeth?

You should start to brush your child’s teeth beginning at age 4. By the time they reach age 8, most kids can begin brushing for themselves.

*NOTE – You may want to supervise your children until they get the hang of it.

You can follow these steps in teaching your children the correct way of brushing teeth

  • 1st Use a pea-sized dab of an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste. Take care that your child does not swallow the toothpaste.
  • 2nd Using a soft-bristled toothbrush, brush the inside surface of each tooth first, where plaque may accumulate most. Brush gently back and forth.
  • 3rd Clean the outer surfaces of each tooth. Angle the brush along the outer gum line. Gently brush back and forth.
  • 4th Brush the chewing surface of each tooth. Gently brush back and forth.
  • 5th Use the tip of the brush to clean behind each front tooth, both top and bottom.
  • 6th Don’t forget the tongue! It’s always fun to brush the tongue!

What type of brush & toothpaste to use for them?

Use soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Don’t forget, kids love flavoured toothpaste! Strawberry, watermelon, lemon and more! Just choose according to their likings.

Here’s a video of how you should do it.

When do you start taking your child to see dentists?

The first visit

The first dental visit is recommended by 12 months of age, or within 6 months of the first tooth coming in. The first visit often lasts 30 to 45 minutes. Depending on your child’s age, the visit may include a full exam of the teeth, jaws, bite, gums, and oral tissues to check growth and development.

The second visit

Just like adults, we recommend children to see the dentist every 6 months. Some dentists may schedule visits more often, such as every 3 months. This can build comfort and confidence in the child. More frequent visits can also help keep an eye on a development problem.
